<br />
Gonna post a couple recent OC Weekly covers that I had the pleasure of working on.<br />
<br />
I was fortunate to work with Art Director Dustin Ames, on both covers. So a BIG thanks to Dustin for throwing me some work!<br />
<br />
The first cover had to do with the false savior of The Orange County Register, Aaron Kushner.<br />
<br />
Kushner, a Boston businessman bought the newspaper with claims he'd transform journalism. He was supposed to be the guy who would save "print" and hired a ton of new staff to bolster his creative vision.<br />
<br />
Basically he sucked, and he ruined the paper.<br />
<br />
Dustin had the idea to have Kushner riding a wrecking ball ( a la Miley Cyrus) into the building of the newspaper he was supposed to save, with staffers running for their lives.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKWUjZ6oowsR-ijpHSTmoBjiYEquxuGmgi-mOx-PMkpkpUbwbdkCuKnHTSqBJeNcSDaDov9JkGQSAJFDvLQuU0LshabRMB-obG3H94CsP_7ImRyxd0ZslfYINY63-cueS72BlRzkr0sKrF/s1600/44-wrecking-ball-kevin-mcveigh+780.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKWUjZ6oowsR-ijpHSTmoBjiYEquxuGmgi-mOx-PMkpkpUbwbdkCuKnHTSqBJeNcSDaDov9JkGQSAJFDvLQuU0LshabRMB-obG3H94CsP_7ImRyxd0ZslfYINY63-cueS72BlRzkr0sKrF/s1600/44-wrecking-ball-kevin-mcveigh+780.jpg" height="640" width="529" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
He came in like a wrecking ball!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
Ok so on to the next!<br />
<br />
This was another fun cover to work on. This time the focus was on the embattled Mayor of Anaheim, Tom Tait.<br />
<br />
<div>
Tait is splitting from his political party in
certain ways, and in doing so he is becoming less popular with the Republicans, Democrats and
business interests.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
He is pissing off Angels, Mice Elephants and Donkeys!!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here's a thumbnail sketch followed by the final cover.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>

<div>
Batter Up!!!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I was really pleased with the end result. I experimented with a little bit looser painting technique, plus I got to paint one my daughters favorite characters, Mickey.</div>

"Freedom is the right of all sentient beings."<br />
-Optimus Prime<br />
<br />
As a product of the 80's I was fortunate enough to be exposed to the best cartoons and the greatest toy lines as a kid.<br />
<br />
One of the greatest cartoons and toy lines were the Transformers! I still own my originals and when I can, I seek out the elusive Masterpiece Transformers manufactured today..30 years later.<br />
<br />
So yes it is the greatest toy line ever!!! suck it Go-bots!!!<br />
<br />
So enough about how awesome the toys were. The greatest Transformer of all time was Autobot Optimus Prime. He was the leader of the good guys and led his Autobots against the evil Decepticons.<br />
<br />
In 1986 Transformers the Movie was released. I went to see it in the theater, and to my horror, Optimus Prime was killed off about 10 minutes into the flick. My 9 year old self shed a tear for the fallen leader...OK several perhaps...OK I may have been sobbing...it was a long time ago...<br />
<br />
He was killed off to make room for the new line of Transformer toys, and they eventually brought him back to life later in the TV series, so no big deal. I can say that now with getting choked up.<br />
<br />
Anyways so I had an idea for this illustration quite a while ago but never got around to drawing it. I'm sure everyone at one time or another has been to a grandparents house or an older relatives house, and seen a picture on the wall of Jesus with his fingers in the air and a glowing heart on fire. Here is a version of the pic I'm referring to.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQ1UrMOfxMfa5319Y8khhkFRuJV2uVfJ8L8oyHMiEwXFC657DPBJ7C68sNIFY22kHvydcI18i_uYYHnsmJLFsJuw6UoSZUA1oLwUwZ8tZ94sN3ElKPYDyKe90v_-BFTBw_qRiCZwA3ZUlt/s1600/sacredheart.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQ1UrMOfxMfa5319Y8khhkFRuJV2uVfJ8L8oyHMiEwXFC657DPBJ7C68sNIFY22kHvydcI18i_uYYHnsmJLFsJuw6UoSZUA1oLwUwZ8tZ94sN3ElKPYDyKe90v_-BFTBw_qRiCZwA3ZUlt/s1600/sacredheart.jpg" height="200" width="150" /></a></div>
You know what I'm talking about now, I bet. The eyes would follow you wherever you went in the room.<br />
<br />
Well for some reason I wanted to draw Optimus in the same gestured pose only instead of the Sacred Heart, It would be the Sacred Matrix.<br />
<br />
The Matrix was introduced in the 86 movie that made me cry. It was carried by the leader of the Autobots, whomever that was.<br />
<br />
So I figured Jesus came back from the dead...Optimus came back from the dead...and blah blah blah blah blah...<br />
<br />
Here is the initial sketch, followed by the finished illustration.<br />

OK this is a piece that I did because I am a New Yorker, more specifically a Long Islander.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1gA_sgWMEQ2NN2YIDLoSeOJX9vfZ4tW_wD5skm9wLp_xChwEA-YmhvcpIr4_IZZH9MABlqeu0NE9ryARFcKjnXbO2opG5bMvxcShbYjvs2ppRA2MZSsfiXnFBSdWjYS_dz64wTVnl2oWH/s1600/cuomo+high+on+power-McVeigh.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1gA_sgWMEQ2NN2YIDLoSeOJX9vfZ4tW_wD5skm9wLp_xChwEA-YmhvcpIr4_IZZH9MABlqeu0NE9ryARFcKjnXbO2opG5bMvxcShbYjvs2ppRA2MZSsfiXnFBSdWjYS_dz64wTVnl2oWH/s1600/cuomo+high+on+power-McVeigh.jpg" height="640" width="490" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The Guv introduced a reform bill to restructure Long Islands power utility LIPA. This was mostly due to LIPAs failures during super storm Sandy and Hurricane Irene. Basically LIPA was given the boot, to be replaced by Jerseys own PSEG. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The Guv also seeks to decriminalize Marijuana and is looking to introduce a program allowing up to 20 hospitals to prescribe and distribute medical marijuana.<br />
<br />
So yes I painted the Governor taking a bong hit out of a LIPA smoked stack with his prescribed medical marijuana.<br />
<br />
So begs the question...Is the Governor "High on Power?" or doing a good job.<br />
<br />
All I know for sure is that my electric bills a "high" as Hell.<br />
<br />

I'll get around to posting some from the past sometime soon, but for now I'll focus briefly on this years edition.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
National Lampoons Christmas vacation is becoming my favorite Christmas time movie to watch. I was always a big fan of The Christmas Story, but Chevy and the gang see more airtime during the season and not just on Christmas Eve through Xmas like Ralphie and the crew.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So I decided on drawing the worlds most famous Cousin in-law...Cousin Eddie, portrayed but actor Randy Quaid. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We all know the famous scene in which Eddie is emptying his RV's septic tank into the storm drain, while while wishing a Merry Christmas and informing everyone that the "Shitter was full."</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXJgSCC2-NwuLASg2MWrmU3nYXN4b_BlE8zQiqsmzVEObktOItwOsUoMOtUoazVs6etsqtFTTf1QqYZZ7GwCJz4vqIDiMkRH09ujuUPNBv6Q-q0Xfd9-nn5j2khi8irop8WykUmqDVqk5N/s1600/cousineddiexmascard+copy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXJgSCC2-NwuLASg2MWrmU3nYXN4b_BlE8zQiqsmzVEObktOItwOsUoMOtUoazVs6etsqtFTTf1QqYZZ7GwCJz4vqIDiMkRH09ujuUPNBv6Q-q0Xfd9-nn5j2khi8irop8WykUmqDVqk5N/s1600/cousineddiexmascard+copy.jpg" height="320" width="246" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I wanted to mix it up a little, and have Eddie holding the famous Moose Mug instead of a beer and lost the cigar he is seen chomping on in this particular scene. Trying to keep it classy people!!</div>
<div>
I have yet to draw the RV in the background of this sketch yet.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpv05a8n2gZVtaohwmZ4pQGRkxEZwypwrEU9JWDTl7e3QEnatmIm7lcfQKjPCC544V641-atUGO4jwdtAxNDWwIOyV6WrlabrHXIOGA-38114HLAO_jPHXTjIfyQrTs1favKyLFRmUJN5b/s1600/cousin+eddie+greetingcard+McVeigh+-+Copy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpv05a8n2gZVtaohwmZ4pQGRkxEZwypwrEU9JWDTl7e3QEnatmIm7lcfQKjPCC544V641-atUGO4jwdtAxNDWwIOyV6WrlabrHXIOGA-38114HLAO_jPHXTjIfyQrTs1favKyLFRmUJN5b/s1600/cousin+eddie+greetingcard+McVeigh+-+Copy.jpg" height="257" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
As you can see, I had to find somewhere to include his catchphrase, and had to do it without angering my lovely wife. So I came up with a silhouette of the moose mug and "Sh*tter was full" tastefully on the back replacing the "i" with a snowflake. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
A Merry Belated Christmas to All!!! and to ALL a Goodnight!!</div>
<div>

That's right. I said "jeah" which means I owe Ryan Lochte money now.<br />
<br />
I was contacted by the wonderful Jane Fields, art director of Charlotte Magazine and asked to illustrate something for their annual Cracked Crowns article. Which basically cover a bunch of ridiculous things that happen in Charlotte every year.<br />
<br />
The story that caught my eye and thought would be well suited for an illustration was the Ryan Lochte story.<br />
A young female fan of the Olympian gold medalist ran towards him and basically knocked him down. In the fall he injured his MCL and screwed up his training regimen and most likely his ego too.<br />
<br />
Here is a rough sketch.<br />

This was for the Jan-Feb 2014 issue, which is still on the stands people!! stop reading this and go buy an issue!!<br />
<br />
The topic for the cover had to do with Climate change, and how it's affecting the snowfall in the California mountains. No snow in the mountains makes it bad for skiers, snowboarders and ski-towns in general. However the bigger problem is that, this means less spring melt for the valley adversely affecting everyone in the surrounding areas.<br />
<br />
The concept was to have high profile, gold medal snowboarder, Shaun White standing on a barren, dried out mountain, with no snow. How is he to train for the Sochi Olympics with not a ounce of snow on the mountains?<br />
<br />
So I got to work and came up with an approved sketch.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHt4FTjn9uw-BT4c9UQrUQZFiHqZDeX0t28aMQLXVB1OSDR_sC-4NX-4WYVLQ5sGelk0t6rGdHuZVNs1RRvd9HgVu4wWF4NIHeM3X5xhNpypCXdOOw7MmIgovCQ-ESFFX5oGXzjZkhhZ3V/s1600/newutnecoversketchrevised.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHt4FTjn9uw-BT4c9UQrUQZFiHqZDeX0t28aMQLXVB1OSDR_sC-4NX-4WYVLQ5sGelk0t6rGdHuZVNs1RRvd9HgVu4wWF4NIHeM3X5xhNpypCXdOOw7MmIgovCQ-ESFFX5oGXzjZkhhZ3V/s1600/newutnecoversketchrevised.jpg" height="400" width="306" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Shaun White had previously cut his trademark "Flaming Carrot" hair, but Utne felt he would be more recognizable if he still had that "do" for the cover.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Plus I had to tweak his expression so that he didn't look too constipated.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Well not the real comic book world...the movie comic book world...and the panic sent the Internet ablaze!!<br />
<br />
It was announced that there would be a sequel to the Superman flick "Man of Steel." This sequel would be titled "Superman vs Batman." <br />
<br />
With Christian Bale hanging up the cape, Warner Bros were looking for a new caped crusader. Little did everyone know at the time but they were looking through J-Lo's garbage heap of ex boyfriends.<br />
C'mon don't act like you don't remember "Ben-ifer"<br />
<br />
Yes!! Ben Affleck! The man who crapped on the Daredevil movie, but won an Oscar for directing the movie "Argo."<br />
<br />
The Internet lynch mob wanted Affleck to stand down and resign from the flick within seconds of the announcement. Pandemonium set in, and petitions were forged in hopes of kicking Ben out of the tights before he even squeezed into them.<br />
<br />

C'mon peoples of the intranet...that's right I said intranet...lets take a step back and remember the reaction to Heath Ledger being cast as The Joker... See where I'm going? So in the meantime put down the torches and pitchforks and let's give Benny boy a chance. And if he screws up...well...<br />

I was abducted by Aliens.<br />
<br />
OK so enough about that...I don't want to talk about it.<br />
<br />
I had another cover illustration for the good folks over at The Utne Reader back in Sept-Oct 2013.<br />
This was quite fun.<br />
<br />
The issue itself had several articles dealing with some of the hardships College students have to deal with after they graduate and whatnot. One article in particular had to do with making the most out of a little. Basically how someone on a fixed income can still make amazing, inexpensive meals.<br />
So the concept became having celebrity Chef Gordon Ramsay of Hell's Kitchen make some kind of exquisite meal consisting of typical College dorm ingredients.<br />
<br />
This was fun because I was able to crowbar some goodies in the illustration reminiscent of my own college days..or daze. I was able to let loose a bit and come up with something pretty cool.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghv-VQbaurqk9ss13IHcV2SB0kziajLxHwypaCiDWdsopc7aAIq46g4-61EI5AHoibIfaOaWgsQzTCj7UuWO62aDGydFRv66tdpKf1E7Gw1B0dnyQN1TY7r1Y-Q08BFMGvss3rSIJBIOqR/s1600/Ramsay+Utne+Cover+SKetch+McVeigh.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghv-VQbaurqk9ss13IHcV2SB0kziajLxHwypaCiDWdsopc7aAIq46g4-61EI5AHoibIfaOaWgsQzTCj7UuWO62aDGydFRv66tdpKf1E7Gw1B0dnyQN1TY7r1Y-Q08BFMGvss3rSIJBIOqR/s1600/Ramsay+Utne+Cover+SKetch+McVeigh.JPG" height="400" width="338" /></a></div>
This was the initial sketch, with tons of scribbled notes. This was approved so I got to work.<br />
<br />
Presto! the finished illustration. I stayed pretty true to the initial sketch, and if you look close, there are quite a few cool details. This is loosely based on what I can remember of my old dorm room.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdF92cvrFzFuKf4R0PaXXJlffJrj696aOI8lY-UAF_bJfWF_GuYHcW8bPjIzrw7lsZrtVb70I-T8GqAw_lDtVvDDSeH5UPam10T347tVGO1BV2lw2fdsHLdIHjDLu6WcPljvwGFfubHgx5/s1600/Utne+College+Kitch+Nightmare-McVeigh+crop.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdF92cvrFzFuKf4R0PaXXJlffJrj696aOI8lY-UAF_bJfWF_GuYHcW8bPjIzrw7lsZrtVb70I-T8GqAw_lDtVvDDSeH5UPam10T347tVGO1BV2lw2fdsHLdIHjDLu6WcPljvwGFfubHgx5/s1600/Utne+College+Kitch+Nightmare-McVeigh+crop.jpg" height="640" width="494" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It was fun coming up with phony names for the food products, while staying close enough so everyone knew what I was going for.</div>

Well not the entire time...<br />
My wife was all set to go into the Hospital, ready to be induced so we could get that beautiful little baby out into the real world.<br />
I had the bags all packed, and was just waiting for my wife to come down the stairs, and out the door we would go. I checked my email quick before hand and had a wonderful job offer from Christian Williams and the good folks at The Utne Reader. Another cover, this time featuring Willie Nelson and Mary Louise Parker. The topic...weed...the Governments weed.<br />
Well I knew what I was gonna do that night. Pace back and forth a bunch of times, do the crossword puzzles in those trashy gossip mags my wife gets, and do some sketches of Willie and company. I burned right through the trash crosswords, ashamed of the gossipy knowledge I possess. Next I searched a ton of pics on the good ol' Ipad and a sketching I went.<br />

Since I couldn't sleep, due to excitement, my wife in horrible pain(cue the epidural) and the nasty ass recliner I was trying to sleep on, I decided to burn the midnight oil. I turned out a few sketches, the better being the actual basis for the approved cover sketch.<br />
<br />
Later that day we welcomed into our lives a little baby girl, Kara. Life has been amazing since she has been here. I have been quite busy ever since.<br />
<br />
That being said, maybe you'd like to see the actual cover before I start getting all sentimental.<br />

Sometimes it pays to have a Twitter account. <div>
A famous artist once told me "Twitter is awesome, apparently it opens the sky and makes it rain $."</div>
<div>
This is true. This past week artist Leah Tiscione, whom I follow on Twitter contacted me, asking if I would be able to complete a few caricatures for the NY Post. She was slammed with work and wouldn't be able to take the assignment.</div>
<div>
I was flabbergasted!! I just love that word. I've followed Leah's work for a while and was first introduced to her stuff in the greatest book known to man, "The Alphabet of Manliness" by Maddox, a comic book by Maddox and to boot she also does a ton of work for the Post.</div>
<div>
First off I was flattered she even acknowledged my existence on Twitter and second that she even considered me to take on this assignment.</div>
<div>
Leah put me in touch with Maureen Callahan from the NY Post and I was given the job.</div>
<div>
It was a major crunch time job, but I wanted to "get er done!" I wanted to do a good job for Leah( couldn't make her look bad for suggesting me),</div>
<div>
Maureen( if I pull this off, it can lead to more work), and myself, because I'm selfish(just kidding).</div>
<div>
I pulled an all night'er and was able to complete the job and was happy with the final product.</div>
<div>
The subject of the article I was to illustrate for was how Mitt Romney is now the punching bag of his political party for not winning the past election...basically a pinata.</div>
<div>
Maureen pretty much laid out everything in front of me and told me what they were looking for.</div>

<br />
Yea I'm told he got a few bucks for them, and guess what...Mickey Mouse is gonna make new moving pictures of the Star Wars.<br />
<br />
I drew a purty pictures of this Lucas fella. Like to see it? Here it is!<br />

Today I am going to post an Illustration I have on the current issue of Utne Reader.<br />
<br />
I was contacted by the wonderful Editor of the mag, Christian Williams, who gave me another opportunity to create a cover for their next issue. They were knocking around ideas for the March/April ish which had a feature about masculinity. Basically its about how the old image of a tough guy/men who don't deal with their emotions, can be damaging or dangerous.<br />
<br />
To convey this image, Christian proposed "Mad Men" character and symbol of a cool tough guy, Don Draper in his office reading the landmark book on feminism "The Feminine Mystique" with tears runing down his face. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqccYdsuAqf-UeLpKFvevPP_Ak8nW2Z4jr-314Jvj9Mev02PyJqUs2lK8oOOeL5bieEFpYtuRkjof1F_Imt4krw9VcLYr_0AQBUCuP_uifE9VI85OLcOK9n-eHZBdkmQFqD7-4H4PTcE6s/s1600/don+draper+cover+sketch+copy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqccYdsuAqf-UeLpKFvevPP_Ak8nW2Z4jr-314Jvj9Mev02PyJqUs2lK8oOOeL5bieEFpYtuRkjof1F_Imt4krw9VcLYr_0AQBUCuP_uifE9VI85OLcOK9n-eHZBdkmQFqD7-4H4PTcE6s/s200/don+draper+cover+sketch+copy.jpg" width="153" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdV2noQG6x6jvNiyU__WdFLgbMlxHTc6AXF7SUnGM13RcYv2IPso6jz8CjsRicB55XJ4ezY6KBC6Hzex1u3L2goJ8WPMAWamYUp4MMaTe3g2dahwatIBj_RH1oFcng-XkEr_DZZc_oeebT/s1600/don+draper+cover+mcveigh+crop.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="215" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdV2noQG6x6jvNiyU__WdFLgbMlxHTc6AXF7SUnGM13RcYv2IPso6jz8CjsRicB55XJ4ezY6KBC6Hzex1u3L2goJ8WPMAWamYUp4MMaTe3g2dahwatIBj_RH1oFcng-XkEr_DZZc_oeebT/s320/don+draper+cover+mcveigh+crop.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Jon Hamm who plays Draper has such a great face to draw. The man has a gift for expression.<br />
<br />
There is a ton of reference for Mad Men out there, I tried to nail his office as best I could.<br />

Bout time I got around to updating the McBlahg. I've decided that whenever I get a little bit of free time , I will post something, whether it is new, old or random.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Today I am posting an illustration I did for a friend who harassed me for over a year to come up with a tribute to his favorite fallen wrestler. Yes indeed, I'm talking about the great Randy "Macho Man" Savage.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Now my friend was quite shaken by the death of his childhood idol. I think he may have actually shed a tear when he snapped it to a Slim Jim that sad day. He asked me to come up with a tribute painting, something that would immortalize the only man who could get away with wearing day glow, cheetah print spandex and still kick the crap out of you.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
After a year of "thinking it over" I was finally prepared to take on the challenge. My wife and I laughed about a couple ideas as I sketched them on a scrap piece of paper. his way I could tell my friend I had actually started on his masterpiece. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>

<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: start;">Initially the idea was to have Macho Man riding a rocket propelled Slim Jim up to Heaven while playing a Harp which has Slim Jim's fo</span>r strings. That idea was nixed for being too "jerky."</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Instead I simplified it, added some Angel wings and a WWF championship belt. I couldn't make a mockery of this enigmatic gentleman.</div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Right from the start, Christian provided me with a detailed description of what they were looking for. It was a great idea and jumped at the opportunity.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br /><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The idea was to have a more or less horrified/sad Statue of Liberty with water rising to he knees, still holding the torch but pulling up her dress out of the water with her other hand. Also there was to be a ferry tour circling her, with tourists taking photos, as if nothing was wrong. A nod the the fact many people fail to recognize the issue of climate change and the effect is is having on the world.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Another detail was to have her holding Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth" under her arm as well.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br /><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Here are the initial, then refined sketches.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The sketch on the left was sent in for approval and the next was a refined drawing based on the approved sketch.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">After some disscussion it was pointed out that Lady Liberty was not lifting her dress in a ladylike manner...it was looking more like the "The Pee Pee dance."</span><br />

<br /></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> First off is is Mitt Romney and his proposed Presidential seal...if he won that is.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKBJbrjrLYueq2GA0fs73Lb_iTo33JgleO7PbPmEAAyQUe10XAy-Ts5fpnIITdfjIwpZ5roDhYyDFSpfV9wfre2pkebxltc7Jb76bzOiPvK7TAzYbkvTJTSXJZZBn5ksZHRbj_b_O7HMAi/s1600/10-23-2012+10;01;10+AM.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKBJbrjrLYueq2GA0fs73Lb_iTo33JgleO7PbPmEAAyQUe10XAy-Ts5fpnIITdfjIwpZ5roDhYyDFSpfV9wfre2pkebxltc7Jb76bzOiPvK7TAzYbkvTJTSXJZZBn5ksZHRbj_b_O7HMAi/s320/10-23-2012+10;01;10+AM.JPG" width="246" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The initial sketch of a chuckling Mitt, with Big Bird basically crucified on the Presidential seal.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4fmdiBb85dWcc-nSDZLMKwID_izwNcvt5tyfOeRbb9C1IexMbtOnFbgf32B9YUQkUQQ3ppxaeDzJ92rYW_Nq8CiSxwgslcmNw09b7JtzF3t1RwjJX_mMy0TVu75Tkh7fOruvmzfd3N3LG/s1600/Mitts+New+Seal+rgb.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="432" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4fmdiBb85dWcc-nSDZLMKwID_izwNcvt5tyfOeRbb9C1IexMbtOnFbgf32B9YUQkUQQ3ppxaeDzJ92rYW_Nq8CiSxwgslcmNw09b7JtzF3t1RwjJX_mMy0TVu75Tkh7fOruvmzfd3N3LG/s640/Mitts+New+Seal+rgb.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I tweaked the layout so it didn't look as if Mitt was wearing Big Birds butt on his head. I think that was the first time I ever drew a Muppet...BB is a Muppet right?...technically?</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRv1R5U4yW91FU8Mq65l7zMFseT3v5_F51G_LCV3d6IAn9OHj-c4pS9NbjoLhs-frhGODzc3ZnZCG7StjArJdabKzblrW03w-OQiFHSxvpnVvhsdm86p503TC9GoDR0Fzqe_55f4IlXlit/s1600/11-3-2012+12;04;58+PM.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRv1R5U4yW91FU8Mq65l7zMFseT3v5_F51G_LCV3d6IAn9OHj-c4pS9NbjoLhs-frhGODzc3ZnZCG7StjArJdabKzblrW03w-OQiFHSxvpnVvhsdm86p503TC9GoDR0Fzqe_55f4IlXlit/s400/11-3-2012+12;04;58+PM.JPG" width="306" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> During the power outage as a result of Hurricane Sandy, I drew this quick Obama sketch, in hopes that my power would come back on so I could get this illustration finished in time for the Election.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFqYeplD_xcUAjBh6IBdpy0n2didyAQqx4lfKnHhrRf9kv-Km2CWVnIA1gg7YeYqwKBmp8ImARXwBsR-t8WhmAm76dzRqO7_pex16tdEpbCvZ10LgJk5QUDSZbNTCT0s2sVviqBEeEjXMl/s1600/change+question+mark+780.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFqYeplD_xcUAjBh6IBdpy0n2didyAQqx4lfKnHhrRf9kv-Km2CWVnIA1gg7YeYqwKBmp8ImARXwBsR-t8WhmAm76dzRqO7_pex16tdEpbCvZ10LgJk5QUDSZbNTCT0s2sVviqBEeEjXMl/s640/change+question+mark+780.jpg" width="510" /></a></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I consider myself an equal opportunity satirist...and this Illustration works in a number of ways.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The famous "Change" slogan from the last Elections, and well now..."Change" has an entirely different meaning...from a certain point of view.</span></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Seamus the Romney's family pooch was strapped, in a carrier to the roof of the "Mitt Mobile," (a Chevy Caprice station wagon) for a 12 hour road trip from Massachusetts to Beach O'Pine's, Ontario.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">But don't worry Romney built a custom windshield for the carrier to make Seamus more "comfy."</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Needless to say this literally scared the crap out of poor Seamus and made looking out of the windows of the "Mitt Mobile" quite difficult. Yes he pooped and it ran all down the windows...gross.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This in fact was " The Poop Heard Around the Dog World."</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So for the last 29 years dogs around America and the World have banded together and formed a movement called "Dogs Against Romney." </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>Kevin McVeigh Illustrationhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04063749102031986284noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6852915779179709396.post-9669422073200888942012-05-22T11:25:00.001-04:002012-05-22T11:25:33.655-04:00Who's watching the Community Watch?<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Hello out there. I know, but I don't know if you know that I haven't posted anything in quite some time. Well that reason is because my wife and I just moved into a house. Needless to say it gets hectic, and I might have even temporarily lost my mind along with some other things that haven't quite turned up yet. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Well I did this piece right before the move and hadn't had a chance to post it until now.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The content and context of this piece follow the Trayvon Martin tragic story that has been unfolding the last few months.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I don't want to get into the story too much, but will let the images do the talking. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Here are the first sketches I played around with.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5BzuvONQE8jXE7gfhTrCA4rkYvUdhUBgRUvMq7wH39Ze8J6e9L13Y6tu3247SGodFsT9hsFx90qB6KKwHVnb4itPU9MWH5ya9kuG9ibSsT9WPC6p6fBtWTebzVjiIWmvdqqtDVyMphtol/s1600/trayvon-mcveigh+sketches2+copy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="284" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5BzuvONQE8jXE7gfhTrCA4rkYvUdhUBgRUvMq7wH39Ze8J6e9L13Y6tu3247SGodFsT9hsFx90qB6KKwHVnb4itPU9MWH5ya9kuG9ibSsT9WPC6p6fBtWTebzVjiIWmvdqqtDVyMphtol/s320/trayvon-mcveigh+sketches2+copy.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> A more defined drawing. This showed more of what I was looking for in terms of a light and or target being cast.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuLbK_EehHbYaZtE0zDNgNTrcU2NYJQky-Yf7cAB0EQSxtecfrFM6oIfVEruuNVZazUm-JKJF8vlJh-BdpAfThx7jFIE343WdHvO0r7n9O5aqpCw4CRm4XYuboNVBptLwUO28zoIooVCBR/s1600/trayvon-mcveighsketch3+copy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuLbK_EehHbYaZtE0zDNgNTrcU2NYJQky-Yf7cAB0EQSxtecfrFM6oIfVEruuNVZazUm-JKJF8vlJh-BdpAfThx7jFIE343WdHvO0r7n9O5aqpCw4CRm4XYuboNVBptLwUO28zoIooVCBR/s320/trayvon-mcveighsketch3+copy.jpg" width="214" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I felt this wasn't quite there yet, I needed to incorporate Zimmerman, along with the whole concept of the community watch, and more importantly, "Who is watching the Community Watch?" </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Who's watching the Community Watch?</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Well here is the final piece, I'm pretty happy with the way it came out. This whole story is just so screwed up.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I've been meaning to create some more editorial and topical pieces for my portfolio.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">All one has to do is flip through a newspaper or magazine and something is bound to smack you in the face.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Lately, I think we all know prescription drug abuse is running wild in the streets. Its easily accessible, just about everyone has a medicine cabinet and its something that is in the news just about every day.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Basically I wanted to create a piece that was relevant to this topic.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Here is a sketch.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHIgz6kzwh_0xtQcn9s3AlSfKupI3qagA1auVgom1TKXLz5twDR61KYIEpYWhdfPavgZJJJb7qG1KFtCfBJvXG3MQAHTr0s95JKMSFkfohMnPuIFrbufE4mZzlNcaughFVRog0Qlcxej00/s1600/rx+sketch.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHIgz6kzwh_0xtQcn9s3AlSfKupI3qagA1auVgom1TKXLz5twDR61KYIEpYWhdfPavgZJJJb7qG1KFtCfBJvXG3MQAHTr0s95JKMSFkfohMnPuIFrbufE4mZzlNcaughFVRog0Qlcxej00/s200/rx+sketch.jpg" width="156" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I wanted to show the trappings of abuse, so why not trap someone in the pill jar.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjuKhoRGLDdkX4Y3_Ci559vtanLkLvTZamOBIm_TbudsYCA158LKu-3wce3o6OeO4BxpHds0QCtkLyQA08uPA9Wq_eL5Gb8vLUmpt_Lwg60MnM3gQPd0S7sGioHkP_3K-4FG0CUm0ywQZs/s1600/rx1+copy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjuKhoRGLDdkX4Y3_Ci559vtanLkLvTZamOBIm_TbudsYCA158LKu-3wce3o6OeO4BxpHds0QCtkLyQA08uPA9Wq_eL5Gb8vLUmpt_Lwg60MnM3gQPd0S7sGioHkP_3K-4FG0CUm0ywQZs/s320/rx1+copy.jpg" width="238" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">A few work in progresseseses.... I pretty much drew the entire piece straight into Photoshop. It's something I've been trying to do more and more, I can't get away from pencil drawings though.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>

The heart is to replace the implanted heart pump he had "installed" 5 years ago.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I don't know if this still classifies Dick Cheney as a cyborg anymore...but it's more fun to pretend he still is.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Anyway I wanted to create a piece that had ties to another subject that was in need of a new heart. The Tin Man from "The Wizard of Oz."</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi90ZmAhhBKQ7RgMETFprimCmup0AAtiz1r_3cZ4soVbNN3C_yQwevhQ-ryIkm0c2BrtBXuI8u8Rj9BwIThXqkVERzYyONhBDyfd8_udgfDlQFPyqlGfr_B_573bo-lvVEAn6xmihoTiDIp/s1600/kevinmcveigh-cheney+sketches.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi90ZmAhhBKQ7RgMETFprimCmup0AAtiz1r_3cZ4soVbNN3C_yQwevhQ-ryIkm0c2BrtBXuI8u8Rj9BwIThXqkVERzYyONhBDyfd8_udgfDlQFPyqlGfr_B_573bo-lvVEAn6xmihoTiDIp/s320/kevinmcveigh-cheney+sketches.jpg" width="246" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It started out with a some sketches while I was watching the news. At that point I wasn't sure if I was going with a heart clock, as in the movie, or a real heart. I opted for the real heart, because Cheney already had an artificial one, and he was replacing it. But really I just thought it would just look cooler. YEAH MAN!!</span><br />

It was Conan O'Brien with his flaming red hair on fire. I dunno why...maybe I've been watching too much of his show lately, not that that's a bad thing. I've been a big fan since way back, so what better time than now to draw something.</span><div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I started scribbling and sketching, but basically I just wanted to get a rough drawing into Photoshop so I can start playing around with my idea. At this time i wasn't sure if I wanted the fire to represent his hair, or have his actual hair on fire.</span></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEAoThcC3dX6vmuun7TXcKezb4mG26hKDocmYZAyHd-OrgmktLCbs4ocZH9g6V6TK7jsL4D6WBkf0-x9cVl_stF0BxwR3B6WcA_gZYDyupMZwnQrvnEbypSnx9L93snMefuL73m26RxhOS/s1600/tbsacoco+wip.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="193" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEAoThcC3dX6vmuun7TXcKezb4mG26hKDocmYZAyHd-OrgmktLCbs4ocZH9g6V6TK7jsL4D6WBkf0-x9cVl_stF0BxwR3B6WcA_gZYDyupMZwnQrvnEbypSnx9L93snMefuL73m26RxhOS/s400/tbsacoco+wip.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Tbs-a-Coco work in progress</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Well I wasn't feeling the look of the fire replacing his hair, so I decided the drawing must include Conan's signature hairdo, and that was going to be on fire.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">So now we know what Conan is going to look like when he plays Lex Luthor in the upcoming Superman flick.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I had another idea to make Conan's tie resemble a bottle Tabasco sauce..ahhh my vision was coming together...then I realized if I merged Tbs along with Conan's nickname Coco.. It would be Tbs-a-Coco, very close to Tabasco.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It's very sad and pathetic how my mind works sometimes..but I like it.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>

<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Well there it is. Conan's on fire.</span></div>

<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I don't know if you've heard, but the Knicks Have some kid named Jeremy Lin playing for them now, and he's pretty good...</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Of course you know who he is...He went from zero to hero, not that anyone who went to Harvard could be considered a zero, but in the sports world it's HUGE. To go undrafted, then get picked up off waivers, then to come off the bench for the New York Knicks and become an overnight sensation is..well.."Lincredible."</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I'm not going to go into this too much, but the world is going nuts for this kid, and "Linsanity" is at its max...but what happens next?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The premise for this piece was, how long can "Linsanity" last before it takes a toll? Especially on Lin himself. I mean he is playing in the toughest sports market next to..I dunno...Iran? The New York sports media, and New York sports fans, can make or break an athlete. They love you one minute and loathe you the next...I should know, I'm one of them. A New York sports fan that is.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">He seems like a good person and I wish him a long successful career, that is if he doesn't go "Linsane" in the process.</span><br />

</div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Howdy do? Just before the new year a buddy of mine told me Mattel was holding a "Create a Character Contest" for the Masters of the Universe toy line.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I was elated, but under the gun. I was working on a job that had to get done by Christmas Eve, and the deadline for the Mattel contest was on New Years Eve.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">That didn't leave me with much time, however being that I am a smooth Mofo, I was able to finish that job a day before Xmas Eve and had a day or two between Christmas and New Years to scribble out a few ideas for the Mattel contest.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The contest was open to pretty much anyone who wasn't an employee of Mattel, and the age group wasn't limited. So I figured I'd have a leg up on all of those crayon clenched little kid fists. But who knows...the winner won't be picked until July...sighs.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The contest stated you had to use "shared parts" within the toy line already. If you remember from back in the day, they would just repaint an old figure and give a new name, and presto you have a new figure. For example Moss Man was just a Beast Man figure minus the armor, painted green with pine scented flocking glued to him.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Stinkor was basically Mer-Man repainted like a skunk. You see where I'm going.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">So keeping in mind the "shared parts" criteria I pulled out a name of a character I created as a kid. His name was Furnace Face. Basically he had a metal head that was on fire...Don't judge, this was the early 90's. I even sent a drawing of him to Stan Lee...stop judging...If I can find a picture, I'll post it. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Anyway I thought the name was perfect for the toy line. Now I just need to figure out what parts to use. Here are the ingredients used.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Sketch of Furnace Face.<br /><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> - waist and legs of Roboto.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> - Trap Jaw's arms (from before he became Trap Jaw...I dunno either).</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> - Man At Arms chest armor.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> - Head from the Faceless one ( Except it would have to be recast clear with flames and tinted reddish orange).</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Behold the sketch and final drawing.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Pretty bad-ass dontcha' think??</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I will probably lose to some 9 year old who based his character on a mix between his grandma, a poodle and Bieber.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Oh well I had fun creating Furnace Face so whatever happens, happens.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Nuff said.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">I am an illustrator who was looking to expand my horizons a little bit with my very first Blog. I feel like an adolescent girl writing in her diary for the first time, this is very unusual for me, if I only had a Menudo poster on the wall I'd feel more comfortable.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">OK so lets get down to brass tacks...what does that mean? anyone?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">I wanted to post a few things on this blog that I haven't had on my website yet (that website being <a href="http://www.kevinmcveighillustration.com/">www.kevinmcveighillustration.com</a>). I am a HUGE Star Wars geek, and just finished a piece that it a mix of..whatever I'll just show you.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Now I did this purely for fun, and the fact that Paul and Maul rhyme. I actually like Ron Paul, but I thinks it's more because I feel sorry for him. But hey this isn't a place for me to talk politics. But interestingly enough the Texan Congressman uses the Imperial March( Darth Vader's Jam) as one of his Campaign "Fight Songs." I found this out a day after I finished this, and yes it made me smile. I also have to admit I read this in my Wife's People magazine... she has a subscription, I just like to look at the pictures.</span><br />
